Lantern and Lock

A night on the canal locks, drawn as forty small painted icons that had to read at 9mm on a wooden token.

My first full commission after leaving the studio I trained in. Pelican & Hare had a finished game about running a canal at night and a set of placeholder icons nobody liked. They wanted forty painted marks for lanterns, moths, sluice gates, cargo and weather, all legible on a stamped wooden token at 9mm.

I painted them at 60mm in gouache and then spent two weeks doing nothing but shrinking them and throwing away the ones that turned to mud. Twenty-six survived to print. The nine that failed taught me more than the twenty-six that worked, and I have kept them.
