A Murmur of Cranes

Sixty bird cards for a flooded-fields game, each one a different species and none of them a mascot.

Rookery Editions asked for sixty cards of migrating birds and were very clear that they did not want cute. The design called for players to recognize a species across the table, in bad light, upside down, so silhouette did all the work and color did almost none.

I worked from field guides for the shapes and then threw the reference away and painted them from memory, which is the only way I know to keep a bird from looking stuffed. The cover watcher on the dyke was the last thing I painted and the first thing everyone mentions.
