Beacon Hollow

A hill map with a signal fire at the top and eleven runners on it, painted so the slope reads as effort.

Northgate Games needed a board where climbing feels expensive. Their prototype used a hex grid and everyone treated the summit like any other space, so I threw the grid away and painted the hill as a hill, with the tracks laid over it.

The runners are painted at three sizes depending on how far up they are, which is not how perspective works but is how difficulty feels. The developer let me keep it. The signal fire is the only saturated thing on the whole board.
